Collections, colaboration and communication are the keys to success! Living documents. Ideas never expire - they evolve. I need a tool… We need a tool that promotes the appropriate environment for the evolution of ideas.
I’m being a little dramatic - I’ll calm down and try to work through my frustrations.
First, let me say that we (phixda) have a great vehical for our ideas. This nerdpress blog is growing and it is working for us.
Second, I like working on projects as a team. I don’t like designing or developing in a silo. I made an earlier post about how I don’t think veal would be able to create good designs - I’m not saying that one person can’t create something great, I’m just saying the chances of something great being greater increases when people work together.
C) remember when we all “worked” together at blockhead and we set up the dwiki, I think we were really on to something there. I wonder if it is still being used? In my new position I have been asking that we start using some similar tools for communication and project management… Becareful what 2 birds in a rock and hard place lead a half a dozen monkeys to Sharepoint- thanks microsoft.
This is where my frustrations begin.
Ah Sharepoint. It’s such a good software idea that we have totally stopped using it here at Sitelab in CA. We are in now in favor of our custom extranet based off of an early version of activecollab. As for our wonderful dwiki back at Jerkhead Moron, I wouldn’t hold out much hope. Last time I spoke to Megan they were laying everyone off, well just because its that time of year. I don’t think Cliff is gone but all the subs we once considered co-workers are now gone.
Sad really considering for a time, even with the restraints, you all had a pretty good team going there for SIM development.
This blog is a good place for an exchange of ideas but it is not as collaborative as it could be. It does serve its purpose however. How’s everyone doing by the way? Comcast still trying to control the brainwaves of millions through light emitting diodes? Yellowbook still letting the aliens control the flow of people searches? Drexel still trying to make breakthroughs in information architecture?
I offer my condolences.
CIM has a bunch wikis for our internal documentation.
Sharepoint will be supporting Silverlight web parts pretty soon! I know you’re excited but try to keep your pants on, Chris.
i know i’m way late commenting here…
collection:
we have a wiki on our intranet for all website related things. we try to document our php classes as best as possible in comments and offer explanations on how to use them on the wiki.
we also use the wiki for setting up the development environment, links to useful software and tutorials and really just a bunch of other things. i used it a lot when i started working here… not so much anymore.
collaboration:
we also have a tech blog where we discuss new technology like we do here on phixda only with more of a focus on education… not so much on programming stuff. a post for jw_flv player was submitted a few days ago… everyone who is registered contributes somewhat regularly.
communication:
we also try to get feedback from faculty. in fact, my first large project was a web profile editor for faculty and it “launched” this morning. my boss’ boss, the assistant dean, came down and already gave us feedback about the reception…
