Touchable Holography Good Idea, blog, impressions | (1)
This the first great use of the Wiimotes since Johnny Lee! Takayuki Iwamoto, Mari Tatezono, Takayuki Hoshi, & Hiroyuki Shinoda of the University of Tokyo have developed a system that gives tactile feedback to users interacting with holographic images! The sensation is produced with ultrasound that can simulate the feeling of things like falling rain drops or small creatures running around. "The Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display solves this problem by producing tactile sensation on a user's hand without any direct contact and without diluting the quality of the holographic projection." The pen is mightier! Design, Good Idea | (1)
One thing I've never been able to understand is how to use the pen tool. I'm not very good with Photoshop to begin with. The best I can do is swap heads or put people in compromising situations... but vector stuff just baffles the hell out of me! PSDTUTS just release this fantastic guide for using the pen tool. Tivo and Dominos team up to allow broadband Tivo viewers to order pizza either during a Dominos commercial or through the Tivo menu. The system will even track the order time for delivery or pickup, but you will have to pay the delivery guy in cash. This is another blurring of the digital/physical line, and another heart attack for America. Tivo Press Release Tivo has had the "press the thumbs up button to learn more" feature for at least a few years now. I like this new extension of their old idea.

News of the Backberry Storm came out over a month ago now, but I've been too swamped to write anything. When RIM announced that the Blackberry Storm's touchscreen provides tactile feedback they raised my hopes and dashed them quite expertly (I explain further down). It turns out, the feedback they call "ClickThrough" was designed because RIM's co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said he can't type on a piece of glass. The short story is they use two different sensor layers. Jquery wins everytime Good Idea, best practices, rant | (1)
I've decided. I'm done thinking about it. I'm done meeting new frameworks and blind dates with hand coded one off train wrecks and two birds are a stone. I made this decision weeks ago. Way back before Addy was even born (I'm an obsessed new dad) I made this decision on phixda's first birthday. Google Audio Indexing Bad Idea, Good Idea | (0)
They did it again. Google has an experimental search feature on the labs section of the google site. Audio indexing currently searches through video and finds matches of words and phrases and provides shortcuts to jump straight to the result. Is this the next stenographer killer? Will closed-caption/subtitle programmers have to find a new job? Will the RIAA have a hissy fit when lyrics are ultimately indexed by someone they can't afford to sue? Time will tell!

Do you remember playing connect the dots in first or second grade? Drawing lines until you were delightfully rewarded with a crude drawing of a butterfly. Swype is like playing connect the dots with an onscreen keyboard. Swype is a gesture based text input method for mobile devices and tablet PCs using a stylus or fingertip, but there is no reason why it couldn't be used with a standard PC and a mouse.
