2D barcode formats? QR code? Data matrix?
It’s all new to me but these black and white squares have been around as an open standards project since at least 1989. And obviously this technology is big in japan. All technology is big in japan. Just like all up and coming new music is big in Belgium.
So this is a QR barcode for phixda.org ( i took this picture on the train with my iphone) and if I have a QR code reader app on my iPhone (which I do - neoreader) and I take a picture of it - the app reads it and opens the web browser and goes to phixda.org - And that’s pretty neat. Pretty neat as long as I know about this stuff and have all the required hardware and software.
No technology would be complete without a format war and a lack of a universal reader. The two big players seem to be data matrix and QR code. Data matrix has the support of nasa, US DoD and “other major industries” - whatever that means and QR code is the most popular one in Japan - your choice
i’m going to make some tshirts and stickers - maybe a coffee mug and a mouse pad. i’m going to sell them on cafe press. I’m going to get a 2D barcode tattoo on the back of my neck - henry rollins is so last millenium - henry rollins is so 1D - i wonder how many dimensions the mooninites use for thier barcodes

I read about these about a month ago. It’s pretty neat that cell phones can now carry the hardware & software to decode them. Chris, I think I can help you, and others, choose the winning format.
Data matrix is used by the DoD which still uses IE5.5 & IE6 as well as a poor implementation of SCORM.
QR code on the other hand is popular in Japan. Ya know, the country that brought us just about every cool piece of technology we use today. It’s also used by Google Print Ads.
Apparently Ralph Lauren is using these in NYC as a POS marketing campaign.
I see that Ralph is at it again as well.
I also think I remember reading something somewhere about how you could make your drink online for Starbucks and then using your iPhone, cornered market, tell the advanced POS machines in the store what it was by showing the QR code to a reader.
No more getting your order wrong. I think the Starbucks thing was on Stephen Gates blog as well as the Ralph Lauren stuff, but don’t hold me to it.
